Note Optical fiber SFP Plus cables are commercially available; they are not available from Cisco Systems.
Attaching Multimode and Single-Mode Optical Fiber Cables

Attach the appropriate optical fiber cable directly to the SC-type receptacle on the GBIC module or the LC-type connector on the SFP module. You can use either simplex or duplex connectors for most devices. (See Figure 12.)

?For simplex connectors, SFP+ two cables are required, one cable for transmit (TX) and a second cable for receive (RX).

?For duplex connectors, only one cable that has both TX and RX connectors is required. Caution If you plan to use a GBIC-LX/LH or GLC-LH-SM at distances greater than 984.25 feet (300 meters) over 50/125-micron or 62.5/125-micron multimode fiber, to prevent data transmission problems you must use the mode-conditioning patch cord. (See the "Attaching the Mode-Conditioning Patch Cord" section.)

HP's new server and switch market, revitalize

HP on June 22, 2010 announced its 10 new ProLiant G7 server (3 rack-mounted servers and blade servers 7) and an Ethernet optical transmission module, the module can be inserted into its Blade System both with the use, HP is also the first time in a blade server to achieve high-capacity optical fiber fusion. June 29, HP has demonstrated its top-shelf switches, can make the rack-mounted servers supporting the use of optical fiber with the polymer. Polymer optical fiber means is IP (or LAN traffic) and storage (either Fibre Channel or iSCSI) are on the same network transmission. And HP upgraded its focus on the new Blade server installation interface, to rise from the 1GigE 10GigE, so that you can greatly increase the SFP + optical transceiver sales. This wave will begin in the fourth quarter of 2010 continued into 2011, can be even longer. HP is not in its servers and switches on the design of any support 10GBase-T or QSFP function.

New servers and switches Cisco Transceiver

7 5 Blade server with 10GigE LOM designed to allow IP, FC and iSCSI Blade information board in each of the two 10GigE ports on the embedded run. HP acquired ServerEngines, LOM purchased from Emulex. The three rack-mounted servers can be equipped with the same technology, coupled with an Emulex adapter manufactured by HP, it has a SFP interface, users can connect with them SFP + optical modules can also be associated through the copper SFP + Twinax connection. HP has 56% of the Blade server market, 38% of the x86 server market. 10GigE server port is expected to ship later this year, next year's shipments will become exponentially. Virtual connection FlexFabric10-Gb24 HP interface module will activate the polymerization fiber. The 10-Gb24 Blade interface module is a module, through the 10GBase-KR, installed with HP's BladeSystem Blade interface in the base frame, and then by 8 SFP + uplink modules to connect to the outside world. Because BladeSystem by 10GBase-KR backplane connection, so the interface with the Blade server does not use frame-based SFP + modules. Blade of the SFP + modules with real data for the eight groups with a Blade-based interface module for rack up the transmission. Blade module jointly developed by the HP and QLogic.

Furthermore, 29 June, HP announced that its A5820 type top shelf switches. Module and switch module through the blade in the 16 and the top shelf in the rack server switches to identify the packet type (eg: IP, optical channel or iSCSI), and the eight 10GigE uplink SFP + module, two FC and two Blade system to send data packets, thus achieving real server polymer fiber. In turn, FC packets to be sent to the existing SAN to access storage, and IP data packets to spread LAN. From the architecture-based server to the switch, and then uplink to be used for each associated transceiver or SFP + Twinax copper.

Heralds of the transceiver to accelerate the growth of the market

Cisco SFP+ Declaration expressed in FCoE first phase of its operation. The first phase of the FCoE that companies are either using blade servers and switches, or use of rack servers and switches. Used in the present communication blade / rack-top ToR switches, IP and FC will be separate to the existing communications SANs and LANs. The second stage is more reflective technology FCoE networks, FCoE FCoE packets through the network. This phase will help determine the transmission and FCoE switch design. Final stage is to ensure that data packets FCoE FCoE network in the normal transmission. The first phase of implementation, HP only had a simple rack wiring and management, but the existing FC SANs and 10GbE LANs have no effect. The second and third phases, the user still fully transferred to the network a few years time.

The first phase of optical transceiver has a significant impact on the market. In other words, 16Blade server transceiver is not used, but by the 10GBase-KR backplane connector on the system receiving the Blade. However, in the uplink transmission process, we need eight such SFP + SR, LR or LRM modules. This means that 16 servers share only eight SFP + transceiver module or SFP + Twinax copper. On the other hand, Blade implementation of the system so that the light transmission network has become so easy, 10GigeE FCoE operations to meet the LightCounting in the next 12 to 18 months from the transmission rate of the user to upgrade to 10GigeE 1GigeE requirements. Furthermore, rack servers and the introduction of the switch the server from the rack to switch, SFP + optical transceiver modules or Twinax copper wire transfer there between the extraordinary significance.

Finally, LightCounting and Cisco SFP jointly issued a declaration in June, said: As 10GigeE and FC / iSCSI leader in optical network coverage, will continue to improve the user to work faster transfer rate. HP is a high-capacity servers tycoon, low-cost 10GigeE LOMs and high performance with simplicity and the relative ratio of the new switch adapter, and the comparative results should be announced to customers. Worth considering is a short distance (eg 1 to 5 meters) transmission, the end users will adopt the new SFP + Twinax cable before replacing the SFP + optical modules and cables. End users understand and believe light communication network, but the end user will not be because Twinax cables offer low cost short-range transmission can not believe its performance. This year, LightCounting will update our outlook transceiver market should tend to counter.

What is the difference between an Intel Network adapter and Network Connection

Many people do not take notice of the last word in the description of the network interface. I would probably fall into that same group of people if my job did not include supporting Intel? Ethernet adapters. Nevertheless, an important difference exists between the device names that end in adapter compared to names ending in connection.

Intel makes both server adatper and integrated circuits used for building Ethernet connections into a computer motherboard. You can tell if your Ethernet connection is built in or not from the name. No matter whether you plug your cable into a network connection or a network adapter, the connection works the same. Knowing whether you have an adapter or a built-in connection can be useful if you need support help or want to update your drivers.

If you see “Adapter” in the name then the devices can be added and removed from connectors on the computer motherboard. Intel? Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter and Intel? PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter are examples of adapters.

When you look at Windows* Device Manager under network adapters, you might find an Intel? Network Connection on the list. Intel network connections are built into the computer by the manufacturer and are not customer removable. Network connections are based on Intel? Ethernet controllers or Intel? Ethernet PHYs paired with Intel? I/O Controller Hubs (ICH). Intel? PRO/1000 CT Network Connection and Intel? 82566DM Network Connection are examples of built-in Ethernet connections.

So how does knowing whether you have an adapter or a built-in connection help when you need to contact support? For built-in connections you should always go to the computer manufacturer for help and driver updates. Each manufacturer knows their computer designs best and is the best source for driver updates that work with your computer.

If you bought your computer with an Intel network adapter already installed, the computer manufacturer is still your best bet when you need to contact someone for support or want updated drivers. Many preinstalled adapters are OEM versions, which are supported by the computer builders instead of by Intel. As a last resort, the driver downloads on intel.com will work with most, but not all, of the OEM network adapters and network connections.

If you bought a boxed Intel network adapter then Intel customer support is ready to assist you if you need help. We have a support site for network adapters with answers to many of your questions along with the latest drivers available to download and install.

When I search the Internet for any parts to add to my computer, I often find parts on sale at steeply discounted prices. If I buy from a discount seller, I might not be getting a retail part, or worse, I might be getting a counterfeit. Buying from an authorized retailer is a good strategy for avoiding counterfeit parts.

Counterfeit products are a problem in many industries. You might think of counterfeit products as something sold on a street table or in a flea market, but plenty of these knock offs are sold online.

Sometimes you might encounter counterfeit ethernet adapter labeled as Intel adapters. Counterfeit Ethernet adapters tend to be manufactured as cheaply as possible. The counterfeiters are not worried if the adapter will fail to work when you install it, perform poorly, or break after a short time. You might not find out that your adapter is a counterfeit until after the adapter fails, and you try to return it for a replacement.

If you have a counterfeit, there is no one to turn to when you encounter problems. The bargain can turn out to cost you more than a genuine adapter when you take into account the cost of buying a replacement, suffering from poor performance, or being without a working network connection.

Fortunately, network adapter finding a source for genuine parts is not difficult. Retail versions of genuine Intel? Ethernet adapters are sold through authorized retailers and supported by Intel Customer Support. If something goes wrong with the Ethernet adapter because of a manufacturing defect, buyers are covered by Intel’s limited lifetime hardware warranty. Software and driver updates are regularly available from Intel Download Center.

In short, if you want to have the peace of mind from knowing the adapter will work as expected, along with the limited lifetime hardware warranty and access to Intel Customer Support, then your best bet is to buy from an authorized retailer.

SFP transceiver module enables Gigabit Ethernet

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Bel Fuse Inc. announced the availability of its SFP-1GBT-03 transceiver module, a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) device offering Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) speeds over Category 5/5e unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) copper cable. The module supports copper networks, with an integrated SerDes PHY interface that can connect directly to a fiber-optic module.

Lee Hancock, broadband SFP+ product manager at Bel, said, "Bringing the new SFP-1GBT-03 transceiver module to market is a significant achievement for Bel, especially at this low price point. By integrating Broadcom's BCM54616S Gigabit Ethernet transceiver, the small form-factor module helps OEMs lower system cost and substantially reduces power dissipation in applications enabling high-speed, cost-effective network connectivity over copper cable. We are pleased to be again working with Broadcom to develop products of superior quality and functionality to help customers expand their Ethernet applications."

"Broadcom's BCM54616S Gigabit Ethernet transceiver provides the industry's lowers power and highest integration for maximum flexibility in systems design," said Ravi Manik, product line manager for Broadcom's PHY line of business. "Its integration into Bel's SFP-1GBT-03 transceiver module is a logical solution that will help enable a new class of cost-effective Gigabit Ethernet SFPs."

Notably, Bel says the SFP-1GBT-03 SFP Plus operates at 610mW (typical in 1000BASE-T applications) and 320mW (typical in 10/100Base-T applications) for cost and performance efficiency. It mates using a conventional RJ45 interface, and fits into standard Multi-Source Agreement (MSA)-compliant SFP equipment. Supporting both full-duplex and half-duplex communication, the module complies with IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, and 802.3ab specifications, and supports IEEE 802.3u and 802.3ab auto-negotiation features allowing networking equipment to automatically determine and adjust the required setting.

How To Change Virtual Machine Network Adapter Manually

A virtual network adapter is a program (instead of a physical network adapter) that allows a computer to connect to a network. A virtual network adapter can also be used to connect all the computers on a local area network (LAN) to a larger network such as the Internet or a collection of LANs.

Here, I would like to share how to change virtual machine virtual network adapter manually. In fact, you may know you can add a new virtual adapter and choose the adapter type from drop down menu.

Here you go:

1. Login to VMware ESX server 2. Type vmware-cmd -l and look for virtual machine (vmx = vm config file) which require change virtual network adapter 3. You may check VMware KB Article: 1001805 for available network adapters details.

VMXNET — The VMXNET virtual network adapter has no physical counterpart. VMXNET is optimized for performance in a virtual machine. Because operating system vendors do not provide built-in drivers for this card, you must install VMware Tools to have a driver for the VMXNET network adapter available.

Flexible — The Flexible network adapter identifies itself as a Vlance adapter when a virtual machine boots, but initializes itself and functions as either a Vlance or a VMXNET adapter, depending on which driver initializes it. With VMware Tools installed, the VMXNET driver changes the Vlance adapter to the higher performance VMXNET adapter.

E1000 — An emulated version of the Intel 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet NIC, with drivers available in most newer guest operating systems, including Windows XP and later and Linux versions 2.4.19 and later.

VMXNET 2 (Enhanced) — The VMXNET 2 adapter is based on the VMXNET adapter but provides some high-performance features commonly used on modern networks, such as jumbo frames and hardware offloads. This virtual network adapter is available only for some guest operating systems on ESX/ESXi 3.5 and later.

4. Edit Virtual Machine vmx file and choose virtual network adapter as show below:

The Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 ethernet adapter is a wireless network adapter card that can be installed in your computer to enable wireless network functionality.
